Super Animal Royale is the latest addition to the Battle Royale genre. Instead of superpowered humans or military soldiers, you instead get to play as cute little furry animals. Does this game have a place in the Battle Royal space? Let’s find out
Super Animal Royale’s gameplay is just similar to any other Battle Royale. Land anywhere on the map. Get weapons, get items and armor, and then seek to destroy your enemies. The only difference is, you’re playing as animals. The game is also played in a 2D top down environment.
You start off with a few selection of animals that you want to play as. The other animals can be unlocked by collecting Animal DNA. These are awarded everytime you play. You are also able to specify which animal DNA you will get by using Magnets. The animals don’t have any special powers or anything, so choosing any animal over another doesn’t really have its advantages other than you being able to represent a very cute animal.
You can queue up for four different modes: Solos, Duos, Squads (4 player team), Mystery Mode. Once you queue up, you will be taken to a “lobby” where you can wait until the lobby gets full and the game will start right away. You can also select the server in which you want to play.
You will then be transported by this giant eagle duck hybrid. You can then bring up the map to see where you would want to land. Pressing the Eject key will then launch you into the land below with an umbrella as your parachute. You can toggle the umbrella on and off to make your descent faster. The quicker you land, the quicker you can find weapons and ammo to kill off your opponents.
It’s a very fast paced game and the gameplay is very reliant on you finding the best weapon and armor there is. There are five types of rarity for weapons and items: common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary. You can loot most of the common to epic items on the ground or by opening rebel caches. Legendary items usually come from the Mole delivery which is the games “care package.”
There’s a plethora of weapons and items that you can use to be able to fight against your enemies. Some of them are familiar like the AK-47 or the shotgun. Some are unique to this game like the Poison Dart Rifle or throw a skunk at an enemy so they take Skunk Poison damage.
Gameplay is very easy to get familiar with. You can also turn on tutorial tips to help you when it’s your first time playing the game. I like the simplicity it provides when it comes to control layout and button mappings. It makes it easier for you to learn them, letting you focus more on fighting your enemies rather than focusing on learning the controls of the game.
The one thing I noticed with the controls was that there are times the firing of weapons don’t work. I thought the game has reload but it doesn’t seem to be the case, so it’s a possibility that the controls didn’t work.
The art is very beautiful in this game. The art style really matches with the game. Makes you feel all fuzzy and warm inside and yet you get the rush from killing off the other animals. There’s currently one map out but hopefully in future seasons they will provide more maps to invoke the mayhem.
The game also has cross progression, similar to Fortnite. So if you are currently playing on Steam and you get a Playstation as a gift sometime soon and want to play it on there, you can just login with your account and it will automatically transfer all your progression from that Steam. What is truly unique about this game right now that sets it apart from other Battle Royales is the ability to purchase previous battle passes. Allowing you to collect any of the previous exclusive battle pass items should you have missed playing at the time the battle pass was released.
Overall, Super Animal Royale is a fun, fast paced game that anyone can truly enjoy. If you are tired of the current sweaty Battle Royales, Super Animal Royale is the breath of fresh air you need. I highly recommend this to veterans of the genre and newcomers alike.
