Yakuza Executive Director Says Microsoft, Nintendo Rejected Series

Yakuza Kiwami 2 title

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is coming soon and it is a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Yakuza 0 was recently introduced into the PC platform via Steam, but this was not actually the case in the past. Executive director Toshihiro Nagoshi revealed that they were going to other platforms as well, but they were rejected.

Yakuza series executive director explains it all

During an interview with a magazine, Nagoshi laughs at the memory of it all. He said that while they released the game with Sony, they already made presentations about it to Microsoft and Nintendo. In the past they rejected the idea, but now they want it.

Explanation of specific Japanese male target

Nagoshi revealed that it was really difficult for Japanese companies to compete with the western games of high quality and big budgets. He said that if they wanted to, they would have made a game about sports, military or fantasy, but it would need to be released worldwide. Everyone was thinking of the same idea, so everyone was making the same type of games instead.

The executive director did not want to follow that kind of direction. He abandoned that idea of selling worldwide and he did not mind if the female gamers did not like the game. He also did not want children to try their games. He only wanted to go for the Japanese males.

Nagoshi said that he explained his idea to his bosses thoroughly, which took a long time to convince. SEGA at that time was struggling and was close to bankruptcy, which is why they merged with Sammy. After that event, he went to the new owner and presented the game to him. In a professional manner, it was highly irregular and wrong, but the owner said yes. And so, the Yakuza series was born.
