End a year with a bang, that’s how Sony Interactive Entertainment concluded 2018 with 91.6 million PS4 units sold as of December 31, 2018, according to a recent announcement from Sony Interactive Entertainment Hong Kong Limited Singapore Branch.
According to the publisher’s data, they have sold millions of PS4 units during the Christmas season (5.6 million units, to be exact). John Kodera, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s new CEO, has this to say:
“Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”
Just imagine how many people got PS4s for their Christmas presents. This doubles the current install base, and by looking at this year, these newest PS4 owners will get to experience the upcoming post-apocalyptic game from Bend Studios, Days Gone, in a matter of months. While they wait for another hit first-party experience, they have God of War, Detroit: Become Human, Yakuza 6, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Marvel’s Spider-Man (sold 9 million copies as well according to the press release) to keep them busy this first quarter.
Congratulations, Sony Interactive Entertainment, for a successful year and we thank you for all the great experiences throughout 2018.
