PlayStation Galaxy Asks: The Game Awards 2018 Game of the Year Predictions

This year’s The Game Awards is certainly bigger. There are more categories added for esports and 2018 is filled with tons of great games. With the recent launch of Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in October, Monster Hunter: World in January, God of War in April, and Marvel’s Spider-Man in September, it’s an amazing year for gamers, especially for PlayStation fans.

PlayStation exclusives dominated the nomination phase of The Game Awards 2018. It’s worth noting that Santa Monica Studios’ God of War and Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man received tons of nominations such as Best Game Direction and Best Narrative, including Game of the Year; even Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human was also nominated for Best Narrative and Best Performance, and Best Game Direction.

Geoff Keighley revealed the nominees for The Game Awards through a video uploaded to YouTube on November 13, and there are 6 titles nominated for Game of the Year:

  • Monster Hunter: World (Capcom)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (Ubisoft)
  • Celeste (Matt Makes Games)
  • God of War (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games)

That’s a strong lineup, considering Red Dead Redemption 2 in the list, it’s going to be a tough battle.

But the biggest question that’s circling around our gamer’s mind is: which game bags Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2018?

PlayStation Galaxy members have shared their predictions of The Game Awards 2018’s Game of the Year winner. It’s interesting to hear that the majority of the team leans on Red Dead Redemption 2 of winning this year’s Game of the Year.

Red Dead Redemption 2 robbery

Between all these games, I’ve only ever played Monster Hunter World,” our contributor, Jarren Naverette, said. “But considering the talks, it’s either between God of War (2018) or Red Dead Redemption 2.” God of War (2018) alone is already an outstanding game, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is a technological marvel despite its reported glitches and bugs.

All things considered, most likely the latter. It’s difficult to beat the pure effort Rockstar Games put into creating such a heavily detailed world such as Red Dead Redemption 2’s. The pure depth just from watching gameplay online alone is astounding. There are almost endless things to do almost tediously so. It’s a game that can be played over again for months or even a year without getting bored. There’s no beating that.” Jarren added.

Head of News in PlayStation Galaxy, Christian Pepito, predicts God of War as the winner of this year’s Game of the Year in The Game Awards 2018. “I’m going to choose God of War (2018),” Christian mentioned, he then continued: “Why? First of all, I’m a huge fan of storytelling and I can tell you now that this game made me empathize with Kratos and his son Boy… I mean Atreus. I quickly fell in love with the narration, the subtle plot twist, the possible sequels, and other elements. The visuals are awesome as well and the gameplay is just great. So yes, I like this game more than the others.

Enricko Ozoa, our Co-Editor-in-Chief, is looking at Red Dead Redemption 2 as Game of the Year simply because “everything from in-game physics to visuals looks absolutely stunning and it’s as close to realistic as you can get“.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s realism is still debatable due to the fact that the game suffers heavily because of its clunky and sluggish controls, but our Editor-in-Chief, Lexuzze Tablante, says otherwise.

Red Dead Redemption 2 the gang

Despite the problematic controls in Red Dead Redemption 2, the achievement Rockstar Games got for the game is certainly unbelievable,” Lexuzze said.

It’s not just the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 is realistic in most of its aspects, but the world you play in and the people you interact just brings the game to life to a whole new level. God of War (2018) is a great contender, its fluid combat and amazing plot and characters are hard to dismiss, but Red Dead Redemption 2’s fantastic playground and the wide variety of interesting supporting characters lead by just an inch. And even if I want Marvel’s Spider-Man to win Game of the Year, it’s just incomparable to Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War.
