Rocket League Cross-Platform Play Now In Full Throttle

Remember the days when Sony Interactive Entertainment didn’t fully agree with cross-platform play due to “business” competition and the “protection” of their players. After having Fortnite feature full cross-platform play across other competitor consoles – Xbox One and Nintendo Switch – it seems that Psyonix’s popular football game that features miniature remote-controlled cars, Rocket League, also supports full cross-platform play as well.

Psyonix’s announcement on their official website states “With special thanks to all of our friends and colleagues at PlayStation, we are thrilled to announce that starting RIGHT NOW, Rocket League has entered the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program! Players on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam can now randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online match types (i.e. Casual, Competitive, and Extra Modes).

Players across platforms are now able to play against each other regardless of platform. The studio also made sure if you aren’t comfortable playing with other players from another device aside from the PS4 you get to turn the feature off under the Gameplay window. It’s also worth noting that Psyonix is already planning a feature where you can team up in a party and matchmake whether you’re in a different platform.

But what about cross-platform parties? In our first update this year (more information coming soon), we will release our cross-platform party system, which allows you to partner up with friends on any platform with the push of a few buttons.

This is an impressive progress for the cross-platform play feature. With developers like Epic Games and Psyonix promoting cross-play, we’ll definitely see in the near future of having players from Xbox One and PS4 fight it out in the battlefield on first-person shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield V.
